Arlington Makes Noteworthy Progress for Underground Infrastructures

The University of Texas at Arlington has all hands on deck in participation of an all-encompassing, innovative sewer project. Engineers have collaborated on an underground infrastructure overhaul for sewer manholes across the city.  Currently, the University has established a cooperative to inspect hundreds of sewer manholes in an effort to detect any deterioration or erosion within these structures. Each manhole is four to five feet in diameter and can range from four to four-and-a-half feet tall. This is an important project as corrosion of the manholes can also put the sewer mains at risk, allowing rain and other runoff from the surface to enter the wastewater systems. Interestingly, there are more than 19,000 manholes citywide. The UTA project will inspect different categories, types and geographic locations of manholes in Arlington. Although the study will prioritize corrosion protection, the more important aspect of the project is to analyze the data in order to develop a system of prioritizing the remainder of the manholes. A different but equally engaging project, which preceded this effort, is the inspection of miles of sewer pipeline with the use of a robot. Interesting fact: The DFW Airport encompasses roughly 17,000 acres of land. It turns out that the land the airport sits on is larger than the island of Manhattan. DFW Airport is also making strides on behalf of the environment by becoming the first airport in North America to achieve carbon neutral status. The city has also installed water-saving plumbing fixtures in the airport restrooms, thereby saving over 5 million gallons of water each month. DALLAS- You’re On! The WEQ Fair is HERE this year!

The city of Dallas has got it going on!! Lots of things happening here on behalf of new and improved water infrastructure systems. Not only has the city replaced and upgraded all of their water meters for better accuracy, established extensive programs to assist homeowners with their utilities, as well as investing in several current projects to enhance water, wastewater and storm drainage systems city-wide. While the city is on a transformative pathway to ‘all things better’ for vital infrastructures, even statewide, there is also a timely plan to host the 2nd annual Wastewater Equipment Fair, also known as-WEQ.  Save the date! It’s happening next month on April 4th and 5th. Last year’s inaugural event for the Fair was a great success with many who attended the event. This year is expected to be twice the attendance in Big D! The event will take place in Fair Park-Lot 12A and will be outdoors. Expect to be impressed with a full line up and display of Perma-Liner Industries demonstrations and equipment, as well as industrial wastewater equipment that will include sewer cleaning, inspection camera systems, vacuum trucks, pumps and more. The schedule of events will begin at noon on Tuesday, April 4. The University of Texas Develops Trouble-Free Infrastructure Tool

The Center for Infrastructure Modeling and Management at the University of Texas will develop and improve an open source water infrastructure model. This will be used as an important tool, in order to assist communities throughout the city, with issues pertaining to their water infrastructures. The city of Dallas, as well as the vast majority of cities statewide, are struggling to manage flooding and pollution from storm water runoff, and climate change. The University’s mission is to demonstrate how neighborhoods can utilize green infrastructures to combat many of the present day challenges relating to stormwater management. One of the implemented tools will consist of an interactive website; to allow for community engagement with residents who are interested in water infrastructure modeling. The focus will primarily be on cities, water, and energy, as well as the greater implementation of tools to solve more of the substantially related difficulties. The Storm Water Management Model- a water quality simulation model used throughout the world- will be the most valuable tool for planning, analysis, and design related to storm water runoff, sewers, and other drainage systems. The current difficulties range from water losses due to leaks in decaying infrastructure, to the public health hazards of contamination. Interesting fact: Dallas did you know? Residents can estimate monthly water charges- based on the amount of gallons you expect to consume for the month- using an online calculator. This will be based on a 30-day billing cycle. Your actual residential water charges may vary depending on any rate changes. If you have an account with more than one meter, you will need to run the calculator for each meter. Dallas Schedules Sewer Maintenance and Sewer Overflow Advisory

The city of Dallas has a worklist for the New Year that includes the extensive rehabilitation of streets and sidewalks and much-needed sewer overhauls. Recently, the city experienced a large sewer overflow, due to a pipeline collapse in a residential neighborhood. The estimated overflow was more than 300,000 gallons, making the upgrades even more imperative. The city is currently advising homeowner’s to use caution when using water supply wells. Preferably, use only water that has been distilled or boiled for at least one minute for all personal uses including drinking, cooking, and bathing. Residents with private water wells should have their well water tested and disinfected, if necessary, prior to discontinuing distillation or boiling. In an effort to correct the flooding the city has sustained, as well as enhance the sewer system, the Sewer Rehabilitation Project was recently approved and is currently underway. The project will systematically address a portion of the city’s pipelining infrastructures which will include a 42-inch trunk line running along the west side of the city. The rehabilitation project is anticipated to continue through the year. Construction experts and the city’s engineering consultants are collaborating on a five-area plan for the upcoming repairs.   Looking for a volunteer opportunity in Dallas? The city has created an experimental and creative way for local residents to get involved.  Volunteers throughout Dallas, as well as neighboring cities, will have the opportunity to collect and test water samples from water bodies just like the ones you find in your backyard. The results will then be made part of a statewide database for all residents of Texas to be able to monitor the results. Dallas’ Proactive Effort to Keep Sewers Unimpaired

The city of Dallas is keeping things moving with a united resolve, as the heavy rainfall of recent days has placed quite a burden on the sewer system. Residents in many neighborhoods have been affected by the record-setting rainfall. Sewer overflows have been tallied in amounts of 100,000 gallons and greater in several locations. The state requires public notifications for spills of more than 100,000 gallons or when a spill occurs within a half mile of drinking sources.  In most cases, an average household uses 100,000 gallons of water a year, both indoor and outdoor.  Overflows can be caused by the inflow and infiltration of stormwater into the collection system. Heavy rain places a burden on aging sewers that are not designed to hold rainfall or to drain from the property, broken pipes or improperly connected sewer service lines. The city has addressed the issue of faulty pipelines through an Integrated Pipeline Project- a 150-mile-long water transmission system. The pipeline is designed to help meet water demands within Dallas and surrounding counties. The city of Dallas will save up to $500 million in capital expenses and potentially more than $1 billion over the life of the project. The advanced infrastructure project has received awards for a cohesive effort in sustainability and design.   Grease disposal tip: plumbing problems can result from pouring grease and food scraps down household drains. Pipe blockage can be prevented by scraping the excess from plates, pots, pans, utensils, and grills into a can or the trash. The garbage disposal is no place for grease. Proper disposal of grease will keep it out of the sewer system and away from causing damage to sewage and drain pipes as well as the environment.
