Arlington is on a Roll with Sewer Robots

Arlington is on a Roll with Sewer Robots

The city of Arlington has come up with an ingenious way to keep tabs on water quality. Along with the University of Texas at Arlington, the city has collaborated on the use of robots for sewers. The cost to the city is expected to be less than half the cost of hiring a complete service to run a robot and interpret the data. A floating robot will be equipped with a high-definition video camera, a laser to scan the concrete pipe above the water line and sonar to scan below. It will be pulled through the pipes on a cable. The city has 1,222 miles of sewer pipe, but the robot’s workplace will be 48 miles of the largest concrete pipes, which range from 24 inches to 66 inches in diameter. The deployment of robotic technology is also a means to cut water loss. The robot, equipped with a high-resolution camera and special sensors, will be designed to detect leaks and flaws in pipe that can’t be seen from above ground. The city is currently seeking to determine whether the entire section of the 30-year-old water main should be replaced at an estimated $1 million or spot repairs could be made for less. This project will have several phases, including traditional infrastructure upgrades. Costs will also be reduced through more timely repairs and reduction of emergency situations. Interesting fact: the city of Arlington is requesting of residents using rain barrels, to use containers specifically designed as rain barrels. In lieu of buckets, garbage cans or other homemade containers. Other suggestions include: • Be sure to always remove the water that pools at the top of the rain barrel at least once or twice a week. • If possible, place your rain barrel on a surface that will soak up any water that overflows so it doesn’t pool and create a mosquito habitat. • Regularly inspect your rain barrel system. Check for cracks or...

Dallas Outlines In-Depth Water Conservation Agenda

Dallas Outlines In-Depth Water Conservation Agenda

The City of Dallas has introduced a progressive five year water conservation strategy. This Five-Year Work Plan serves as a road map for compliance with the State’s mandates. It also serves as a major component of the Long Range Water Supply Plan. This year’s work plan was developed through a multi-faceted approach that includes review of the previous water conservation planning efforts, as well as review of several water conservation programs, initiatives, data, and literature.  In order to formulate the most efficient plan of action, the city utilized water data which was examined to identify strategic areas to target for additional water conservation opportunities. Numerous water conservation strategies were evaluated using screening criteria, a benefit-cost analysis, and other means to determine their suitability for implementation during the five-year planning period. Some of the programs made available to residential customers consist of a Public Awareness Campaign, Toilet Rebate Programs, a Minor Plumbing Repair Program, Environmental Education Initiative and an Irrigation System Check-Up Program. The Dallas Utilities Department now offers free irrigation system inspections for residential and commercial customers. Inspectors also work with other city departments on proper maintenance and operation of city irrigation systems. The inspections include identification of potential system leaks, diagnosis of equipment malfunctions, and recommendations for equipment upgrades to enhance efficiency. Over 5,700 inspections have been performed since the program was launched. Projected water savings based on implemented recommendations is over 39 million gallons per year. Did you know, individual metering is required at all single-family residential locations? Most multi-family residential locations, such as apartments and condominiums, have individual metering for each building or designated water user. Dual metering is currently provided to some customers based on the individual needs of the user. Certified Installers take note: Perma-Liner Industries would like to invite you to our Refresher Training (Perma-Lateral™ specific) that will take place on July 12th and 13th at our Clearwater facility!! Please plan on attending. Tax Relief for Texans Affected by Floods

Victims of the severe storms and flooding that took place beginning on March 7, 2016 in parts of Texas may qualify for tax relief from the Internal Revenue Service. The President has declared that a major disaster exists in the State of Texas. Following the recent disaster declaration for individual assistance issued by the Federal Emergency Management Agency, the IRS has announced that affected taxpayers in Texas will receive tax relief. The declaration permits the IRS to postpone certain deadlines for taxpayers who reside or have a business in the disaster area. For instance, certain deadlines falling on or after March 7, and on or before July 15, 2016 have been postponed to July 15, 2016. This includes 2015 income tax returns normally due on April 18. The postponement of time to file and pay does not apply to information returns in the W-2, 1098, 1099 series, or to Forms 1042-S or 8027. Penalties for failure to timely file information returns can be waived under existing procedures for reasonable cause. Likewise, the postponement does not apply to employment and excise tax deposits. The IRS, however, will abate penalties for failure to make timely employment and excise tax deposits due on or after March 7 and on or before March 22, provided the taxpayer made these deposits by March 22, 2016. Affected taxpayers in a federally declared disaster area have the option of claiming disaster-related casualty losses on their federal income tax return for either the year in which the event occurred, or the prior year. Certified Installers take note: Perma-Liner Industries would like to invite you to our Refresher Training (Perma-Lateral ™specific) that will take place on July 12th and 13th at our Clearwater facility!! Please plan on attending. Arlington’s Revamping Overhaul of Sewer Pipe Lines

Arlington’s Revamping Overhaul of Sewer Pipe Lines

The city of Arlington is implementing the process of replacing 2 percent of its water infrastructure. This is expected to be an annual endeavor for the city in an effort to maintain an ongoing gap analysis on the expected average lifespan of their water infrastructure.  The city’s most current project is replacing 10,200 linear feet of 6-inch water pipe in east Arlington near B.C. Barnes Park, using the cured-in-place pipe lining method for its sanitary sewer and waterlines.  The city also recently teamed with the University of Texas at Arlington to embark on a high-tech examination of 48 miles of large-diameter sewer pipelines. The project, which will start next month and last three years, will assist city officials determine the lifetime of vital sewer pipe and give the officials a way to isolate smaller areas for replacement. After a particularly rainy spring, one of the city’s major sanitary sewer lines collapsed. While making repairs, workers discovered that its walls had eroded away, which became the catalyst for several other rehabilitations throughout the city.  Partnering with UT Arlington offered a cost-effective solution that also takes advantage of the proximity of highly regarded experts at the UTA College of Engineer’s Center for Structural Engineering. The university and city workers will deploy a robotic unit that records video, sonar and laser data into sewer pipes in the city that measure 24 inches or larger.  The main purpose in doing so is to avoid the reoccurrence of sewer line failures. Arlington’s sewer pipe have been found to have an average of 31 years.
