Dallas Maintains Sewer Integrity and Material Recycling Initiatives

Many Dallas communities are now developing strategies for various means of recycling and composting, in order to limit waste. Many of these techniques are performed by individuals and citizens of the community. Alternatively, it takes a more in-depth process to address composting large amounts of landscape waste. The city has incorporated regional programs in response to neighborhood needs. Several means of composting have been implemented, which will accompany other resourceful projects, designed to further the initiative. The city has relied on data from local neighborhoods as a means of outlining and demonstrating the most effective approach in landscape waste management. In doing so, residents have also become more aware of best practices for the integrity of the sewer systems. Recently, the city opened a brand new, one-of-a-kind, Materials Recycling Facility. The system was designed with the city’s goal in mind of getting closer to zero-waste by the year 2040. With the successful processing of over 1,000 tons of material in the first two weeks opening, the new facility will be an effective tool to meet the sustainable intent. The facility processes more than 250 tons of recyclable material each day and will process and recycle approximately 5,000 tons of materials every month. The facility will accept all single stream material from the city of Dallas and the city of University Park. Dallas, are you looking for a safe, reliable plumber known for quality workmanship? Dallas’ Proactive Effort to Keep Sewers Unimpaired

Dallas’ Proactive Effort to Keep Sewers Unimpaired

The city of Dallas is keeping things moving with a united resolve, as the heavy rainfall of recent days has placed quite a burden on the sewer system. Residents in many neighborhoods have been affected by the record-setting rainfall. Sewer overflows have been tallied in amounts of 100,000 gallons and greater in several locations. The state requires public notifications for spills of more than 100,000 gallons or when a spill occurs within a half mile of drinking sources.  In most cases, an average household uses 100,000 gallons of water a year, both indoor and outdoor.  Overflows can be caused by the inflow and infiltration of stormwater into the collection system. Heavy rain places a burden on aging sewers that are not designed to hold rainfall or to drain from the property, broken pipes or improperly connected sewer service lines. The city has addressed the issue of faulty pipelines through an Integrated Pipeline Project- a 150-mile-long water transmission system. The pipeline is designed to help meet water demands within Dallas and surrounding counties. The city of Dallas will save up to $500 million in capital expenses and potentially more than $1 billion over the life of the project. The advanced infrastructure project has received awards for a cohesive effort in sustainability and design.   Grease disposal tip: plumbing problems can result from pouring grease and food scraps down household drains. Pipe blockage can be prevented by scraping the excess from plates, pots, pans, utensils, and grills into a can or the trash. The garbage disposal is no place for grease. Proper disposal of grease will keep it out of the sewer system and away from causing damage to sewage and drain pipes as well as the environment. A collective effort can help keep sewer systems free from back-ups and harmful debris. Contact us...

One of the educational components SERL uses is for elementary students, providing hands-on lessons taught by certified teachers. After tracking the program’s success, areas where the elementary-school programs were implemented showed reduced water use, by more than 500 gallons per month, in single-family homes. This adds up to more than 6,000 gallons per year for each home and a total savings of more than 22 million gallons of water per year for the entire target area. Dallas Outlines In-Depth Water Conservation Agenda

Dallas Outlines In-Depth Water Conservation Agenda

The City of Dallas has introduced a progressive five year water conservation strategy. This Five-Year Work Plan serves as a road map for compliance with the State’s mandates. It also serves as a major component of the Long Range Water Supply Plan. This year’s work plan was developed through a multi-faceted approach that includes review of the previous water conservation planning efforts, as well as review of several water conservation programs, initiatives, data, and literature.  In order to formulate the most efficient plan of action, the city utilized water data which was examined to identify strategic areas to target for additional water conservation opportunities. Numerous water conservation strategies were evaluated using screening criteria, a benefit-cost analysis, and other means to determine their suitability for implementation during the five-year planning period. Some of the programs made available to residential customers consist of a Public Awareness Campaign, Toilet Rebate Programs, a Minor Plumbing Repair Program, Environmental Education Initiative and an Irrigation System Check-Up Program. The Dallas Utilities Department now offers free irrigation system inspections for residential and commercial customers. Inspectors also work with other city departments on proper maintenance and operation of city irrigation systems. The inspections include identification of potential system leaks, diagnosis of equipment malfunctions, and recommendations for equipment upgrades to enhance efficiency. Over 5,700 inspections have been performed since the program was launched. Projected water savings based on implemented recommendations is over 39 million gallons per year. Did you know, individual metering is required at all single-family residential locations? Most multi-family residential locations, such as apartments and condominiums, have individual metering for each building or designated water user. Dual metering is currently provided to some customers based on the individual needs of the user.
